What is functional Medicine?

If you are not familiar with Functional Medicine, perhaps you have heard of holistic, lifestyle behavior or natural medicine.

The emerging yet rather ancestral field of Functional Medicine is looking at health and lifestyle problems from a root cause perspective, instead of just addressing the symptoms. It’s helping identify why and how a person got to this point in their health journey and what they can do to improve or reverse the outcomes.

Functional Medicine puts the patient’s care back in their hands and allows them to take a more active, responsible and preventative role in their health.

It typically addresses a person’s relationship with food, movement patterns, sleep habits and stress management, as well as other lifestyle behaviors. It also looks at environment, relationships and elements to which a person is commonly exposed.

Functional Medicine introduces the concept of using food as medicine and complimenting the necessary use of prescription medication with supplementation.

It looks at health, not just from a lifespan perspective, but also from a healthspan perspective. Functional Medicine promotes quality of life, not just longevity.

Finally, Functional Medicine views the brain, mind and body as all working together in harmony or disfunction. Mental and emotional health can be experienced just as much somatically throughout the body as it can the brain.
